Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died and caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress in order for them to survive. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended school. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue the acting career. It was not without problems. After landing a gig as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she was unable to get opportunities on stage. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. There she made a buck as an usherette by during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first job as an actor. Drama studies led her to earn her degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
